Amadeus: The Inside Story

Amadeus is one of, if not my top, plays and movies of all time.

Written in 1979 by Paul Shaffer, it premiered at the Royal National Theatre in London and became an instant success. The original starred Sir Paul Scofield as Salieri and Simon Callow as Mozart. Then it moved to The West End and then finally Broadway.

On Broadway, which had legends Ian McKellen and Tim Curry portray Salieri and Mozart, respectively. It was nominated for 7 Tony Awards, including best actors, best director, best play, best costume design, lighting, and set design. It won 5 of the said nominated categories.

Then, in 1984, director Milos Forman decided to turn the award winning play into an award winning film. Besides having the cast as all English, he mixed English, American, Italian, and German actors into the mix.

There must be something about the plot because the film won a plethora of awards as well. It won 8
Academy Awards, launch F. Murray Abrahams career, and made Mozart's music popular once again.

In my next post, I will be casting Amadeus as if made if made tomorrow.

Wish me luck!
